:: geek lust ::

Ars-Technica - A bunch of East (and now West) Coast geeks from Ivy League schools who manage to disseminate interesting tech info on a daily basis. My personal "portal" to the world of tech news.

[H]ard OCP - A gang of redneck overclockers from my part of the world, dedicated to running PC hardware as hot and fast as it can go. Sometimes even faster ...

Ace's Hardware - A perennial favorite for the SPARC geeks, this site digs deeper than 3DMark 2001 or Quake III Arena benchmarks and looks at the guts and gore behind the performance numbers. The tech forum is a good place to brush up on your assembly-coding skills or get flamed for not knowing exactly how many pipelines the newest Ultra-SPARC processors have.

:: stuff that makes me laugh ::

Cockeyed.com - The Bad Things That Can Happen To You page earns this page high honors in my list of places to go laugh out loud, and the How Much Is Inside? page is right up there with it.

Red Meat - The author - a total sociopath, a comic genius, or a scary combination of the two.

Bill Hicks - Just about as blunt as he wants to be.

BBSpot.com - Geek humor that hits the spot - no pun intended.

Dan's Data - I haven't found a tech site that had me crying tears of laughter before - this crazy son-of-a-bitch from Australia is just about the best web writer I've found yet. From fun ways to piss off your co-workers to dreams of power, this guy covers it all. Something like 300 articles worth - go get some.

:: things that i read ::

Frank Herbert - He wrote a lot of other works while he wove the magic mythology that is the Dune series, but they will always be remembered as the pinnacle of his writing career. An amazing author and a fascinating man.

James Ellroy - L.A. Confidential, White Jazz - brutal static masquerading as novels. Noir with all sorts of idiosyncratic twists, characters that border on despicable, good guys who get killed - he might not be the best, but he's never boring.

Clive Barker - With Galilee, he once again steps into the realm of greatness he touched with Imajica and The Damnation Game. Looking to Coldheart Canyon to satiate my need for another fix.

Douglas Adams - The man behind the ever-expanding Hitchhiker's trilogy (tetralogy, quintology?) - for when I want to laugh until I cry. The answer is 42, Zaphod. Anybody who thinks he's actually dead is crazy - he's just taking some time off for tax reasons ...

Patricia Cornwell - For those 'drive by the car wreck slowly' kind of moods, kind of like watching a good TV movie.

Harlan Ellison - This guy knows even more about what's up than Vonnegut - check out anything he's ever done for a thrill ride on the dark side.

Alan Dean Foster - For those days when I want to relax, kick my shoes off, and escape to the other side of the galaxy. Funny to think that when I first put up this page, most of these authors didn't have websites. And now look at them go ...

Peter Straub - From Ghost Story to The Throat, a unique cast of characters, both real and unreal, and some incisive jabs at the nature of the human beast.

J. R. R. Tolkien - When I want to be amazed.

Stephen King - We sure hope this guy doesn't know jack - but it's fun to pretend.

Kurt Vonnegut - This guy has known what's going on all along . . . if you haven't read Galapagos, then you're still in the dark.

The Register - For news about how much my next CPU is gonna cost.

Snakeskin - Some good, some bad, all worth checking out.

The Green Man Review - Novels, film, music, and more, all wrapped up in a tidy package. Low on fat, high on content. Highly recommended.

Urban75 - An interesting look at what it is to be young and 'free' in the UK today.

Weekly Wire - A whole bunch of affiliated arts and news rags linked together . . . they feature Red Meat , so they have to be good.

:: things that make me think ::

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Started by the late Douglas Adams, this was to be the Earth-bound realization of his legendary creation, complete with large friendly letters saying "Don't Panic". Not perfect, but certainly entertaining.

The Auschwitz Alphabet - Know the evil that men do.
